Rehab
What do we mean by Rehab?
Rehab is just an abbreviation for Rehabilitation. Without some form of rehabilitation, recovery from an injury or long standing spinal problem can take longer to achieve. Overlooking this aspect of the recovery process can result in a relapse.
What sort of rehab should I do?
Your Doctor of Chiropractic will give you a set of simple exercises that are specific to your problem and to where you are on the recovery process. These exercises make an enormous amount of difference just as long as you can remain disciplined enough to do them regularly. They are normally very simple and can be done at home.
We realise that many people who come to us for treatment are not used to doing exercises and therefore find it difficult to fit them into their lifestyle. We bear this in mind when we design the programme.
Should I join a Gym?
Although joining a gym can be a good idea in the long term you may not be ready to join a gym, therefore you should always ask your doctor first. And if you do join a gym, make sure that you get specialised advice before you start. Good gyms will always have a qualified trainer present.
The rehabilitation process can be a slow one and rushing into too much exercise can do more harm than good. It is always best to seek specialist advice first.
Rehab at a Chiropractic practice
Some practices run their own rehab courses and their research often reports excellent results. A typical chiropractic rehab course might consist of a thirteen week programme and is usually designed to meet the specific needs of the patient. A good rehab practice will ensure that all exercises are supervised by a trainer who will start a patient off with specific warm-up exercises, moving onto strength, endurance training and stretching.
A trainer will encourage progress by increasing resistance or the number of repetitions as a patient gains strength through the course of the programme. There are very few practices with a rehab facility but they are becoming more popular as the benefits are realised.
If you are keen on joining a gym then a rehab course such as the one described above serves as excellent preparation. Your trainer and Doctor of Chiropractic will advise you when you are ready to join the gym.
